Laga Chunari Mein Daag Bollywood Movie Review

The film is a blend of emotions, told partly in the good old style but set in the contemporary milieu.

There is nothing new in the story. The film is about a middle class (or is it poor) family living in Benaras. The father, played by Anupam Kher doesn't do any work. The poor mother Jaya Bachchan works day and night stitching clothes on her old sewing machine in semi-darkness. They have two daughters, Rani Mukherjee and her younger sister Konkona Sen. Rani sets out to Mumbai in search of livelihood.

In Mumbai, she encounters all kinds of people including Abhisekh and Kunal Kapoor. Rani falls back on the world's oldest profession to survive and bring up her family! Her younger sister Konkona, who now has an MBA degree to boast of, joins her in Mumbai. The film then runs along predictable lines to reach the climax after a few twists and turns.

Laga Chunari Mein Daag Hindi Cinema Review

The film revolves completely around Rani Mukherjee. But one gets the impression that she has not given the best performance. She can do better. It is Konkona Sen, as the caring and bubbly younger sister who gives a brilliant performance. Anupam Kher is his usual self. Jaya Bachchan gives a restrained performance. The bonding of the mother and daughters is shown well. Abhisekh and Kunal are just used more as props to run the story in Mumbai. Hema Malini plays a guest role. Sushant Singh as the bad guy is ok. Shantanu Moitra's music is fairly good.

Laga Chunari Mein Daag Filem Review

The film is good in parts and a little too old fashioned at times. The director has tried to be different but succeeds only to an extent. It is strange that in today's world a woman has to resort to only prostitution to survive. Why did the director not think of any other profession for the heroine? The editing is also not up to the mark. Cinematography however gets full marks. The photography is very appealing and adds grace to the film.

Bharatstudent Verdict: The film is definitely an above average and can be watched once.
